I have a soft spot for heroes who are heartbreakers. You know the type—the man who can have any woman he wants, and often does, but who can’t or won’t commit. Not until he meets the heroine, that is. There’s just something that appeals to me on a visceral level about the fact that she alone engages his emotions. Makes him recognize that his life would not be complete without her.
The hero in Loving the Marquess has the reputation of being a rake and a heartbreaker. We don’t see this in the story itself, though. In this book the Marquess of Overlea is still a heartbreaker, but it’s for a different reason. Circumstances dictate that he keep his new wife at arm’s length, despite the fact it is the very last thing either of them want. And his need to push his wife away—even though he very much wants to claim her for himself—leads to much heartbreak on both their parts.
How about you—do you like the traditional heartbreaker hero? And do you like him to come with baggage that keeps him from committing to one woman, or do you just prefer your heroes to be sexy bad boys?
